A Note From Layne: Water filtration is the most effective way for most people to reduce their estrogenic exposure because so much of it comes through your water and municipal water treatment processes are unconcerned about and unequipped to remove it. Essentially all estrogenic substances can be filtered out of your drinking water with a simple activated charcoal filter. But there’s more to it than that. Those of us who understand the sources of hormone disrupting substances know that they leach out of plastics. So we have additional requirements than most people that buy filtration systems. The hunt was challenging, but we present here for you a variety of options, the SMARTEST of which are essentially plastic free. If you can only afford a filtration system with a plastic reservoir, like a pitcher, YOU SHOULD STILL BUY IT for the all-important filtering process, then pour the water into a glass or stainless steel container for storage. Be sure and replace the filters as often as the manufacturer specifies or you defeat the entire purpose. And remember… really, nobody upstream cares what’s in your water. YOU are in charge. PUR Plus Water Pitcher Filtration System

Plastic reservoir is acrylic-based polymer according to mfg, best choice for folks on a budget. Definitely a step in the right direction. I recommend filtering water then pouring into glass container for storage. Don't let filtrate sit in plastic. Do not wash in dishwasher even though is says dishwasher-safe. Removes more heavy metals (although reg. PUR filter was not tested for lead), pharmaceuticals, estrone, and environmental estrogenics, but filtration is slower because of this. Keep it full and plan ahead.

Aarke Pitcher-Style Water Purifier with "Refillable" Filter Material

My top choice for pitcher filtration. Swedish-engineered stylish glass carafe, with stainless-steel filter cartridge and silicone gaskets. Filtration material (ion exchange resin and activated carbon) is loosely poured into filter cartridge and periodically replaced from refill bags eliminating plastic filter housings. Clever and thoughtful design with contact surfaces almost exclusively from inert materials. (BPA-free thermoplastic used for manual filter change indicator on underside of lid). 10 cup total capacity, 5 cup filtered cup capacity. Filter time: 3-5 mins. Sort of high end, but an affordable alternative to expensive under-counter systems or big countertop stainless-steel containers for a small household. And as close to a perfect system that I have found!

G3P600 Reverse Osmosis System

The tankless reverse osmosis (r/o) systems are nice. Smaller and take up less of the busy space under your sink. I like the simplicity here. This is a triple filter system. May want to add the mineral filter to add back minerals. (Really improves taste.) Low drain ratio of 2:1. Many r/o systems waste 3 parts for every part they produce and can really raise your water bill. NOTE: For some reason, the mfg says not to use this system if you use well water.

This is a good example of a glass storage container you could pour your water from plastic filtration pitchers into. It's short enough to keep in the fridge. Plastic resin on spigot is unknown, so I'm recommending on this page a stainless-steel spigot to buy and swap out the plastic one with so you don't have to worry about estrogenic plastics. And loosen lid slightly for free flow.

Hydro Flask Standard Mouth Bottle with Flex Cap

Hydro Flask bottles are made from 18/8 pro-grade stainless steel, which is generally a safer option than plastic for avoiding hormone disruptors like BPA and phthalates. They use double-wall insulation with no interior lining, helping to reduce chemical exposure. The lid contains polypropylene plastic (#5), which, if you have to use plastic, is one of the better options, along with a silicone gasket. The powder coating on the exterior is durable, though some coatings may contain trace PFAS—Hydro Flask hasn’t disclosed whether theirs does.
