DISHWASHER SOAPS

When searching for dishwasher soap that is free from hormone disruptors, there are certain things you should aim to avoid. Here are some guidelines: Phosphates: Dishwasher soaps that contain phosphates should be avoided. Phosphates are commonly used to enhance cleaning performance but can contribute to water pollution and disrupt hormone balance in aquatic environments. Look for phosphate-free dishwasher soaps. Synthetic Fragrances: Dishwasher soaps often contain synthetic fragrances that can include a mixture of potentially harmful chemicals. Some of these chemicals may act as hormone disruptors. Opt for dishwasher soaps that use natural or fragrance-free options. Phthalates: Phthalates are commonly used as fragrance carriers and plasticizers in various products, including some dishwasher soaps. These chemicals can have hormone-disrupting effects. Look for dishwasher soaps that are labeled as phthalate-free. Chlorine Bleach: Dishwasher soaps that contain chlorine bleach can release harmful chemicals and byproducts during the dishwashing process. These chemicals can be hormone disruptors and contribute to indoor air pollution. Choose dishwasher soaps that do not contain chlorine bleach or opt for chlorine-free alternatives. Harsh Chemicals: Avoid dishwasher soaps that contain harsh chemicals, such as sulfates, parabens, or formaldehyde-based compounds. These chemicals have the potential to disrupt hormones and can be harmful to human health. Opt for dishwasher soaps that are labeled as free from these harmful ingredients.

Dish Soap

9 Elements Dishwashing Liquid Dish Soap

9 Elements Dish Soap is one of the cleaner options out there, using vinegar as a key ingredient to break down grease and grime without harsh chemicals. It’s free from synthetic fragrances, dyes, and parabens—common culprits when it comes to hormone disruption. While I’d prefer a plastic-free bottle, this formula is a step in the right direction for those looking to minimize exposure to unnecessary toxins in the kitchen. If you’re looking for a dish soap that cleans effectively while avoiding the worst offenders, this is a solid choice.

FOOD STORAGE CONTAINERS

When searching for food storage containers that are free from hormone disruptors, there are certain things you should aim to avoid. Here are some guidelines: Plastic Containers: Many conventional plastic food storage containers may contain hormone-disrupting chemicals, such as bisphenol A (BPA) or phthalates. Opt for alternatives to plastic containers. Polycarbonate Plastic: Polycarbonate plastics, marked with the recycling symbol #7, often contain BPA. Avoid food storage containers made from polycarbonate plastic. PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) Plastic: PVC plastic, marked with the recycling symbol #3, can contain hormone-disrupting phthalates. Look for containers that are not made from PVC plastic. Styrofoam or Expanded Polystyrene: Styrofoam or expanded polystyrene food containers are not recommended for food storage as they can leach harmful chemicals into food. Non-Stick Coatings: Avoid food storage containers with non-stick coatings, as they may contain perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) that can act as hormone disruptors. Look for alternatives without non-stick coatings. Stainless Steel or Glass Containers: Consider using food storage containers made of stainless steel, glass, wood, or ceramic. These materials are generally safer options and do not leach hormone-disrupting chemicals into food.

Glass Storage Container

Pyrex Simply Store 4-Cup Single Glass Food Storage Container

The Pyrex Simply Store 4-Cup Glass Container is a good option for avoiding hormone disruptors in food storage. The glass itself is a safe choice, free from BPA, phthalates, and other chemicals that can leach into food. While the lid is BPA-free plastic, I’d avoid microwaving with it on to minimize any potential chemical exposure. If you’re looking for a reliable glass storage container, this is a solid pick.

Silicone Lids

GUANCI Set of 8 Silicone Lids

The GUANCI 8-Pack Silicone Lids are made from food-grade silicone, which is free from BPA and other harmful chemicals, reducing the risk of hormone disruptors leaching into your food. These lids come in various sizes, making them versatile for covering different containers and reducing the need for single-use plastic wraps. However, it's important to note that while high-quality silicone is generally considered safe, lower-quality silicone products may contain fillers that could potentially leach chemicals, especially when exposed to high temperatures. To minimize any potential risks, ensure that the lids are indeed made from high-quality, food-grade silicone, and avoid exposing them to extreme temperatures.

Glass Storage Container

Pyrex Meal Prep Simply Store Glass Rectangular and Round Food Container

The Pyrex Simply Store 9-Pack Glass Food Storage Set offers a practical solution for those aiming to reduce exposure to hormone disruptors. The glass containers are free from BPA and phthalates, ensuring that no harmful chemicals leach into your food during storage. However, it's important to note that some users have reported instances of the glass shattering when microwaved, even when following usage guidelines. To minimize risk, avoid sudden temperature changes, such as moving the container directly from the refrigerator to the microwave. Additionally, while the lids are BPA-free, it's advisable to remove them before microwaving to prevent potential chemical leaching.

These containers are designed to be collapsible, making them space-efficient for storage. However, as with all silicone products, it's important to ensure they are of high quality to avoid potential chemical leaching. To minimize any risks, avoid exposing the containers to extreme temperatures and follow the manufacturer's care instructions.

Reusable Freezer Bags

Homelux Theory Reusable Freezer Bags

The Homelux Theory Reusable Silicone Food Storage Bags are a good alternative to plastic for reducing exposure to hormone disruptors like BPA and phthalates. They’re made from food-grade silicone, which is more stable than plastic and less likely to leach chemicals into your food. That said, not all silicone is created equal—some lower-quality silicone can contain fillers that break down over time. To be safe, I’d use these mainly for cold storage and avoid heating food in them whenever possible.

POTS AND PANS

When searching for pots and pans that are free from hormone disruptors, there are certain things you should aim to avoid. Here are some guidelines: Non-Stick Coatings: Non-stick coatings, such as Teflon or other similar brands, often contain perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) that can act as hormone disruptors. Look for pots and pans without non-stick coatings. Aluminum Cookware: Uncoated aluminum cookware can potentially leach aluminum into your food, which is not desirable. Avoid using uncoated aluminum pots and pans. Copper Cookware (Unlined): Copper cookware that is unlined or lacks a protective layer can release copper into your food, which may have negative health effects. Look for copper cookware with stainless steel or tin lining. Low-Quality Stainless Steel: Some low-quality stainless steel cookware may contain alloys or coatings that can leach metals into your food. Opt for high-quality stainless steel pots and pans. Non-Food-Safe Coatings: Avoid pots and pans with non-food-safe coatings, such as certain decorative or colored finishes, as they may contain harmful chemicals. Look for cookware with food-grade or ceramic-based coatings. Chemical Treatments: Some pots and pans may undergo chemical treatments during manufacturing, such as the use of certain anti-rust or anti-corrosion agents, which can contain hormone-disrupting substances. Choose cookware that explicitly states it is free from such chemical treatments.

SNACKS AND TREATS

Dark Chocolate Peanut Gems

Unreal Dark Chocolate Peanut Gems

UNREAL Dark Chocolate Peanut Gems compare to M&Ms Peanut™. 150 cals. per 13 pieces. That good old organic cane sugar racks up the calories. These we taste tested. My producer, Jordan, will eat any candy indiscriminately and love it so we asked his super-taster wife. Her appraisal: They taste pretty much like Peanut M&Ms™ but not quite as sweet (which I personally like). The shell seems to be a bit thinner as well.

Chewys Fruit Flavored Candy

YumEarth Organic Chewys Fruit Flavored Candy

Compare to Starburst™, but organic and clean of artificial nonsense. This is a six-pack of 5oz bags. There are about 6 pieces per oz @ 110 cals. I think the taste is good--not as robust as Starburst™, but taste is a funny thing. It will adapt over time to where a new normal is established.

Healthy Snacks For Kids & Adults

SmartSweets Variety Pack

AFC-free, uses a somewhat novel sweetener called allulose. It has the "bulk and mouth feel" of sugar with only 10% of the calories. It's very smooth with no aftertaste, and has little effect on blood sugar. But another sweetener (IMOS) is used too, which does raise blood sugar. So diabetics be advised. The whole 50g (about 17-20 pieces) bag is 100 calories, which is better than all the other gummies we included here. It uses various starches instead of gelatin, so 100% vegan, and gluten-free. Choose from Sweet Fish (like Swedish Fish™), Peach Rings, Sour Melon Bites, Gummy Worms, Cola Gummies, Red Twists, and Sour Blast Buddies.

Gummy Bears

Black Forest Gummy Bears Candy

I love Black Forest Gummy bears. Even their non-organic bears are now artificial dye-free. And the Juicy Bursts too. But watch out... for some reason, the gummy worms still have AFCs! Go figure.

Gummi Bears

Albanese World's Best Ultimate 8 Flavor Gummi Bears

This may actually be the world's best gummy. Soft, fresh, and not sticky. I love that they have recognized that there is a dye-free, health conscious sector out there that eats sweets! But ... NOTE: Only the Ultimate 8 flavor Gummy Bear SKUs are dye-free. Look for the round label on the package front that says NATURAL FLAVORS. The entire rest of their gummy and sours line still has artificial colors. As something of a gummy aficionado, I can tell you those 8 flavors they put in their Ultimate lineup are the best and most intensely flavored of their whole line. Yay for us!

Chewy Candy Bites

YumEarth Organic Fruit Flavored Giggles

Compare Yum Earth Giggles to Skittles™, but these are beautifully organic, GF, and vegan, with no fake stuff. This is a 10-pack of 0.5oz bags (about 17 pieces per bag and 70 cals.). Our taste tester on this was a kid who is a big Skittles fan. He put 'em down the hatch without pause, except for the orange ones. He said they tasted funny. I actually liked them all. In the end, the sugar comes through and washes it all away with happiness anyway. The 5oz bag I bought in Jan, 2023 had a BEST BY date of 06 APR 2024 and all my Giggles were soft and chewy. All in all, a very good alternative.

UTENSILS AND TABLEWARE

When searching for utensils and tableware that are free from hormone disruptors, there are certain things you should aim to avoid. Here are some guidelines: Plastic Utensils: Many conventional plastic utensils may contain hormone-disrupting chemicals such as bisphenol A (BPA) or phthalates. Opt for alternatives to plastic utensils. Melamine Utensils: Utensils made from melamine, a type of plastic, may contain melamine formaldehyde, which can potentially leach into food and act as a hormone disruptor. Consider avoiding melamine utensils. Non-Food-Safe Coatings: Utensils with non-food-safe coatings, such as certain decorative or colored finishes, may contain harmful chemicals. Look for utensils that have food-grade finishes or are free from coatings. Disposable Paper or Styrofoam Utensils: Disposable paper or styrofoam utensils are not recommended for regular use as they can potentially leach chemicals into food and have a negative impact on the environment. Choose reusable utensils instead. Natural and Safe Materials: Consider using utensils and tableware made from natural and safe materials such as stainless steel, glass, bamboo, or ceramic. These materials are generally safer options and do not contain hormone-disrupting chemicals. Wooden Utensils: When choosing wooden utensils, opt for those made from untreated or naturally finished wood. Avoid wooden utensils with synthetic coatings or finishes that may contain harmful chemicals.
